New Features

While X5 supports many of the same features such as export/import to Microsoft Project and the rest of Office Suite, a lot of these elements were re-written and their operation revised.

A very slick new feature called "Map Parts" allows you to re-use elements of your maps in other maps, but also allows you to connect your map to outside data feeds. For example, you can connect a Task in Outlook to a branch (now called a "topic" in X5) so that changing the task in Outlook  changes it in X5.

Another type of feed is a "newsfeed" where RSS, a new type of XML news feed can be linked into a Mindmap so that up-to-the-minute feeds can be displayed as part of the mindmap.

All ingenious stuff. But has it really helped the user who uses MindManager for brainstorming?

Personally, I find that the basic "brainstorming functions" of MindManager 2002 were excellent mainly because they took the 7 most important key functions - Enter, Insert, Cursor Up, Down, Left,  Right, and Delete - and made them the core of brainstorming. Anyone who used the product learned in 5 minutes that by focusing on those 7 keys, you could create a mindmap of any size, and ignore the rest of the program.

X5 is no different, the keystrokes are the same, but there is a key difference you feel in the first few seconds. It's smooth. Graphics draw smoothly, the screen glides around automatically as you create larger Mindmaps. A whole lot of thinking went to the right place - making the program intuitive.

While it has enough "tasty features" like XML import, Unicode support (which unfortunately guaranteed that Windows 98 was no longer going to be supported in X5), an outliner, etc...to keep you busy for quite awhile figuring out what it can do, the program's essence hasn't changed.

It's still the worlds top brainstorming tool, and this version is a "must-have" for anyone writing, managing projects, managing meetings, or simply organizing ones thoughts.
